Benedict Zucchi – Architect Principal, BDP

  • Benedict is an Architect Principal responsible for leading healthcare design in BDP’s London studio. His work has achieved public recognition through a number of prizes, including RIBA Awards for St Joseph’s Hospital,Cork and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Alder Hey also won the 2016 Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, repeating the success first achieved in 2008 with the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. The success of the‘Alex’ led directly to the commission for the Teaching,  Trauma and Tertiary Care Centre(3Ts), a 94,000m² project in three phases which started construction at the beginning of 2016.

Benedict’s lineage of children’s hospitals includes the 2015 masterplan for the renewal and expansion of Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and continues with the design for a major new national paediatric centre in Dublin. This 125,000 m² facility, has a strong affinity with the landscape approach developed at Alder Hey and the aspiration to give the hospital a new identity centred on human values of scale, light, social interaction and place-making.

Benedict’s interest in user participation, a common thread in all his projects, stems from his university research on the Italian architect and member of Team 10, Giancarlo De Carlo, which culminated in a monograph on his theory and practice (Giancarlo De Carlo 1992).
